Folk dancing and Philharmonic groups

The 'Portuguese Times' is a portuguese-language newspaper based out of New Bedford, MA; it was founded in 1971 in Newark, New Jersey and subsquently moved to New Bedford in 1974.

As part of its reporting on the Portuguese community of New England, with a specific focus on the south coast of Massachusetts, it featured events where folk dancing (folclore) and philharmonic groups (bandas filarmonicas) were present.

The Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives has provided information regarding individuals, groups and bands where possible, however, we are looking to identify those who remain unknown. If you recognize a person, band or group, or even an event, please contact us!
